One of the requirements for participating in the WSGA State Amateur is taking four days off of work.
Luckily, Ben Bendtsen III took the time off this year.
Bendsten of The Racine Country Club came out on top in a playoff Thursday to win Wisconsin's biggest amateur tournament of the year, sinking a birdie putt on the second hole of a playoff to defeat Danny Zimmerman of Hawks Landing Golf Club.
This was the 22-year-old Bendtsen's first time playing in the State Amateur in five years, telling reporters after the tournament that one of the reasons he did not compete recently was "it's hard to take time off work."
The former University of Wisconsin-Parkside student now works with his family's business, Bendtsen's Bakery, famous for their Danish kringles.
But for four days this week, Bendtsen took Old Hickory Golf Club in Beaver Dam by storm, finishing tied with Zimmerman at the end of 72 holes with a seven-under-par 281. Third round leader Kelly Kretz finished alone in third at an even-par 288.
Bendsten and Zimmerman exchanged the lead several times during Thursday's final round. Bendtsen took a one-stroke lead into the 15th hole before bogeying the hole and watching Zimmerman birdie it, giving Zimmerman the one stroke advantage.
After both players birdied the 16th hole and scored pars on the 17th hole, Zimmerman held onto his one-stroke lead going into the final hole.
But after nearly holing out a chip onto the green at the par 5 18th hole, Bendtsen tapped in for birdie while Zimmerman sank a seven-foot par putt to send the tournament into sudden death.
Bendtsen and Zimmerman tied the first playoff hole before Bendtsen prevailed on the second. The champ said the victory was the biggest win of his golfing career.
Five years ago, at age 17 and in his last State Amateur appearance, Bendtsen said he missed the cut by one stroke after tying for 11th place the year before.
The Racine Country Club took home this year's Yule Cup team event, with Bendtsen, Paul Jacobsen and Joe O'Brien leading the way.
Next year's State Amateur will be held at Merrill Hills Country Club in Waukesha.
